How to Get Rid of Mice
January 12, 2017
Fall and winter mean cooler temperatures, shorter days, and an increase in the likelihood of a rodent infestation. Just like you, mice are looking for ways to warm up. They’ll stop at nothing to get into your cozy, warm house and nest until the weather heats up. Luckily, it’s never too late to mouse-proof your house. Read on for some helpful tips for how to get rid of mice.
This tried-and-true method of evicting mice is popular for a reason: it works. Mouse traps can be purchased at your local hardware store. Just find the point of entry by locating the place where you see the most evidence of mice (droppings, chew marks) and set and bait the traps nearby.
Poison and Glue
Poison-laced bait is available at your local hardware store. Mice will take the bait, the poison will make them thirsty, and they will retreat to look for food. Poison is toxic to humans, so use this method as a last resort. It can also result in mice dying in walls, under floors, and other hard-to-get-to places.
Rodent glue and glue boards are other types of tools available on the market. Just apply it to some cardboard around a piece of bait, and the mouse will stick to it. This method is much less humane than others as it forces the mouse to starve to death or become bait for other animals.
These handy plug-in devices send out high-frequency sounds that humans can’t hear, but claim to repel mice. This method has not been conclusively proven to eradicate mouse populations, though. It’s best when used in tandem with another form of pest management.
Take Preventative Measures
- Clear your home of clutter. Mice love to curl up and make homes in piles of stuff you have lying around.
- Trim your trees. Clear branches away from windows, pipes, and any other openings mice could use to gain entry.
- Seal your food. Garbage cans should have lids, food should be stored in air-tight containers, and sinks should be free of dirty dishes.
- Seal any points of entry. Mice can enter your home through a space the size of a pen. Check for holes around windows and doors and seal them with steel wool, sealant, and cement.
