How to Get Rid of Waterbugs

Does your home have waterbugs? Before you go searching your water sources for creepy crawlies, know what you’re looking for: a cockroach. “Waterbug” is just a nickname for these pests that was earned because they like to congregate around water. Here are a few steps you can take to get rid of waterbugs:

Look for entryways.

Seal up cracks and holes where they might be gaining access to different rooms in your home. Look everywhere! In the kitchen cabinet, baseboards, between the countertop and the wall—they are experts at making their way through tight spaces.

Fix any water leaks.

If you want to get rid of waterbugs, check out the namesake: water. Roaches are attracted to water and moisture often found by leaky pipes.

Make your own bait.

Mix three parts boric acid with one part powder sugar. The waterbugs will feast on the powdered sugar, and the boric acid will kill them.

Clean, clean, and clean some more!

Keeping a clean home is the best prevention method against cockroaches and can also help get rid of them. They need an environment with food and water to survive, and a dirty space can be a luxurious home for them. Take that away from them and their days are numbered, as long as you maintain it. Cockroaches can live up to three months without food, so they hide in dark corners of a property while they wait to go hunting at night.

Some of their favorite spots include basements, garages, and laundry rooms that see little activity from humans. If they stop finding things to feed on, they are more likely to move on.
