Home Remedies for Ants

4 Things You Can Try

How To Get Rid of Ants in Your Car

It starts with one ant searching for food to bring back to the colony. If it discovers your kitchen is a gold mine of crumbs galore, it will send out the signal to other members of the colony to come and help bring back snacks. Once this free for all starts, it may seem challenging to get your ants problem under control. Fortunately, there are some home remedies you can use to get rid of ants.

Home Remedies for Ants

  • Use a lure. Using a lure is the most effective way to get rid of ants. Ants send out scouts for food who then return to share their bounty and encourage other ants to go to the location of the food. The trick? The lure food is actually poison, and the ant brings it back and kills the colony. Place the delayed poison lure in a spot your kids and pets won’t find it, and it will easily take care of your ant problem.
  • Do a deep clean. Ants invaded your space because of their access to food. Take it away, and it might be the solution you needed to kick out the ants. This method requires some serious elbow grease because you’ll need to find all of the spots that have food—including your dishwasher and kitchen sink.
  • Boiling water for ants in grass. Did you know spilling boiling water down an ant hill can help eliminate the colony? It’s not as effective as a lure, but it can still help address your ant problem. Boil water in your teakettle and very carefully pour it over the mound, which will make the hill cave in and kill any ants still inside. Check back a few days later and repeat the process if there are still some ants roaming around.
  • Essential oils. Some essential oils naturally repel insects. Create a spray yourself by combining 10 drops of essential oils with a cup of water. Pour the solution into a spray bottle and apply it to each room in your house. Eucalyptus oil, lemon, tea tree oil, lavender, and peppermint are common and effective essential oils to try.
