Common signs of a termite infestation

Swarms: As a colony of termites grows in size, mature winged termites, which look similar to flying ants, leave the nest in order to start a new colony. This is called a swarm and is most common in the springtime. Swarms are the most visible sign of termite activity, and a telltale sign of them is the wings they shed soon after they leave the nest. You may see the discarded wings on windowsills and around baseboards.

Mud Tubes or Tunnels: Termites make tunnels that are about the width of a pencil and can be found along exterior walls, wood beams, and foundations. These tunnels, or tubes, are made of dirt and fecal matter and are created to provide a safe way for the insects to travel between the nest and feeding areas.

Fecal Matter: After feasting on wood, termites leave behind their droppings. These sandy piles of tiny pellets are also known as frass.

Actual Termites: You can still have an issue even if you don’t see any living termites, but it helps to know what to look for in case you do see them. These hungry pests range in size from 1/8” to 1” long, and can vary in color depending on their species and age. Termites come in shades of brown, black, and even white. Although they are sometimes mistaken for flying ants, termites have straight antennae, while flying ants have bent ones.

Damage: Unexplained cracks in walls or flooring, hollow-sounding wood, destroyed or damaged wood, and buckled floors or swollen walls that resemble water damage can be signs of termite infestation. Besides damage to wood, termites are more than happy to destroy insulation, plaster, laminate flooring, furniture, and paper products.
