How to Make a Homemade Cockroach Trap

Two Options

Cockroaches enter your home to find a safe source of water and food. That leak under your kitchen sink and the leaking water heater are great watering holes. These nocturnal pests can be difficult to notice because they are awake when you are asleep. Once you discover the problem, you’ll want to get them out and fast. Some people are allergic to cockroaches, so they are more than just pesky pests. One way to get them out is by creating a homemade cockroach trap. Read on to learn two options.

Homemade Cockroach Trap

Option 1: Duct Tape

What you’ll need

  • Duct tape
  • Cockroach bait (solid food)

Step 1: Put a piece of duct tape sticky side up near the location of the cockroaches. Tuck the sides under so it sticks.

Step 2: Place a small amount of solid food in the center of the duct tape. You should use a solid snack because something wet can make it less sticky.

Why it works

The cockroaches try to step on the tape in order to get the snack. They get suck during their attempt and can’t get away.

Option 2: Jar

What you’ll need

  • Glass or plastic jar
  • Cockroach bait (sweet-smelling or oily food)
  • Petroleum jelly

Step 1: Line the inside of the jar with petroleum jelly.

Step 2: Place bait at the bottom of the jar.

Step 3: Set it out where you find cockroaches.

Why it works

Cockroaches are eager to climb into the jar to get their food. Once inside, the petroleum jelly makes it too slippy for them to climb out.
