Inspecting for Previous Termite Damage

However, if you’d also like to give your home a brief inspection on your own, check for the following:
- Extensive Hollow Noises – There are always hollow points in a structure. But since termites eat from the inside out, previous termite damage will often lead to hollow noises in places there shouldn’t be, and will at least hint at further examination.
- Look for Buckling/Warped Wood – Rather than look just for broken or obvious signs of termite damage, look for problems with wood that are more subtle. For example, when termites eat wood, the wood may start warping. Homes with warped wood also deserve further inspection.
- Former Mud Tunnels – Even after a colony has been eliminated, some of what they created will remain. Mud tunnels are a great example. While most of them will be cleaned up, you can sometimes find the remnants of mud tunnels if you look closely.
- Holes in Wood or Clearly Damaged Wood – Of course, when wood is clearly damaged, it becomes much easier to tell that a termite infestation may have taken place. Just make sure you’re looking everywhere, not just in the most obvious places. Sometimes the termite damage can be easily or accidentally hidden, because it occurs in areas that aren’t usually looked at around the home.
Termite damage can be hard to spot, which is why a professional inspection should take place. But at the very least, make sure you look around so that you can be more confident that the home you’re buying has no signs of termites.
