Eggs: Once a female mosquito has the blood protein she needs to lay her eggs, she will lay hundreds of eggs. She can do this three times in her life—that’s a lot of mosquitoes! Mosquito eggs start out white and become black, and are always laid in standing water, wherever the female mosquito can find it. (This means if you want to get rid of your mosquito problem, look for sources of standing water on your property.)
Juveniles: The larvae, small, squirmy and worm-like, feed on bacteria in the water, and sometimes on other mosquito larvae. They grow to adulthood within the standing water they were born in. If deprived of water, the larvae will not thrive. And the warmer the water, the faster the mosquitoes will grow.
Mature Bugs: You’re probably familiar with mature mosquitoes. These tiny, midge-like insects “bite” or sting multiple times to obtain nourishment. Only female mosquitoes will bite mammals for blood, while male mosquitoes stick to consuming plant juices.
