• The highest report rates are concentrated in the Chester County suburbs, where wooded properties and single-family homes can provide numerous nesting locations.

• July, August, and September account for approximately 72% of the year’s reports, with activity reaching its highest point in August.

Stinging insect activity in Pennsylvania is highly seasonal. Reports remain relatively low through winter and early spring, increase during summer, and peak in August. Approximately 72% of annual reports arrive during July, August, and September.

Where to check for nests around your property

Different stinging insects choose different nesting locations. Common areas to inspect include:

• Eaves and soffits: Look beneath rooflines, overhangs, gutters, and porch ceilings.
• Attics, sheds, and wall voids: Watch for insects repeatedly entering and leaving the same opening.
• Decks and outdoor furniture: Check beneath railings, stairs, tables, chairs, and other protected surfaces.
• Trees and shrubs: Look carefully before trimming vegetation or disturbing branches.
• Ground openings: Yellow jackets may nest in old rodent burrows or other underground cavities.

How to reduce encounters with stinging insects

• Inspect during spring. Small starter nests under eaves and rooflines are easier to identify before colonies grow.
• Watch insect flight patterns. Repeated traffic into one opening may indicate a nest in the ground, a wall void, an attic, or another concealed area.
• Cover food and sweet drinks outdoors. Foraging insects become especially noticeable around sugary foods and beverages during late summer.
• Keep trash containers sealed. Clean spills and food residue from outdoor bins and recycling containers.
• Use caution while mowing or gardening. Ground-nesting yellow jackets may defend a nest when vibration or yard work disturbs it.
• Do not swat at active insects. Move away calmly and give the insect space.
• Do not block an active nest entrance. Sealing an opening can redirect insects into another part of the structure and may provoke defensive activity.
• Leave large or concealed nests to a professional. Nests inside walls, high above the ground, or near frequently used areas can be difficult to address safely.

Figures reflect stinging insect service requests received by Green Pest Solutions from January 2024 through August 2026. Requests were grouped by service ZIP code and adjusted using U.S. Census home counts so towns of different sizes could be compared fairly.

The rankings include towns with enough reports to produce a meaningful comparison. Some smaller communities are not shown. Trends compare 2024 with 2025 relative to changes across the wider service region.
